The Most Frustrating DIY Project!
This has been one of the most frustrating projects I’ve ever done. Hubs and I have really tried to be adults lately and actually try and save money, so when it was time for littlest J to get a new bed I tried to see how resourceful I could be. I swore to myself I would never use the head/footboard from the kids crib because every kid (in my opinion) needs to sleep in a twin and nothing bigger. (For the record all 3 of my kids are currently sleeping on full size bed) ANYWAY, We has some old bed rails from our old queen bed that could go down to a full, and well the crib headboard I could turn any color I wanted!
So I set out to find a mattress, and it just so happens a friend was looking to get rid of their set! Perfect, now to redo the headboard! I had a teeeeeny tiny, think sample size, of a grey chalk paint called “Pittsburgh Grey.”
I thought it was perfectly fitting for that color to be the color of his new bed seeing as well he was born in Pittsburgh. I primed the headboard (outside in the scorching hot weather) painted the headboard and it came out the most perfect grey color! Throughout the whole time I was painting I had to be extra careful because I only had such a small amount of paint. After 2 coats it was ready to go, I had used the entire jar of paint and it was seriously so pretty.

I found this matte finish spray made for chalk paint. I was pumped to finish it. Had to work around rain and extreme outdoor temps. Finally found some time to spray, took it outside, shook the can vigorously, pressed down and sprayed for about exactly 6 second and then NOTHING! Pressed again and it spit out what looked to be oil. I was annoyed because the 6 seconds it did spray it had turned some of the grey until a dark color, which I thought just because it was wet, no big deal.
So I took the headboard back inside and tried to decide what to do. I let it dry over the next few days, took the broken can back to home depot, they didn't have anymore. Essentially the bed was kind of ruined. Long story short, I ended up having a can of basic grey spray paint at the house and used that and just covered all my hard work with the chalk paint. In the end, it doesn't have the fun Pittsburgh Grey color I loved, but it's grey, and... well it has airplanes, sharks and dinosaurs all on mis-matched bedding... basically it's perfect! Not to mention the project ended up with a total cost of $0!!!! That's a win in my book!
